Aunt Suze – Landing it

posted by Barbara Rase, August 25th, 2010

“High tide rolls in around 3:30 today, with a chance of afternoon showers,”Aunt Suze announces, as she rattles off a series of details to Travis her nephew and Sophia her niece. It’s summer at the beach and every morning opens with a declaration of water and weather conditions quickly followed by a flurry of fresh topics that swirl around Aunt Suze, who juggles each with the same attention.“You know sea turtles are waterproof, Aunt Suze”. Is this a spider bite?, Will the oil spill cap hold this time? Do you think I could do a backhand spring on the sand?”

On occasion even, their mother, gets to wedge in a question…” Suze,my friend’s interested in starting a new business. She’s had so many false starts and has come to realize she’s afraid to fail.” Quickly shifting from Aunt Suze to Suze Orman, the money lady, she responds, “Your friend wouldn’t have a fear of failure if she prepared herself to succeed.”

Just like a splashing wave, she was washed out to the ocean by Travis and Sophia
leaving me with that thought. Suze always has a clever way of making the simplest ideas life lessons. This time was no different.

Later that day, I found Aunt Suze holding court on the beach watching Travis making a reef in the tide and encouraging Sophia to try a backhand spring on the sand, something she’s been practicing all year. Over and over, Sophia flipped, dodging sea shells and waves riding up the shoreline, while Aunt Suze, sat in a naturally sand carved seat cheering.

Sophia and Aunt Suze had a story they thought I needed to hear. “Months and months ago, Sophia wanted to learn a backhand spring – she started practicing on the mat, moved to the pit, then the trampoline, then she graduated to the tumble tramp and finally after months of practice on the floor she was ready. This summer she proudly showed a perfect back hand spring on the warm soft sands of southern Florida. Aunt Suze was very impressed and used the event to make her point to me as well.

Sophia set herself up for success, she prepared for months and when the time came to show her stuff she was ready and and absolutely unafraid. In the case of your friend, who was starting a new business, her uncertainty is drawn from being ill-prepared. If you’ve done yourself research, know your business and put in the time you’ll have the confidence to fearlessly go after your new endeavor. Preparing for success will prevent fear of failure. She’ll land it, just like Sophia’s backhand spring…
