Business Travel Can Eat At Your Wallet

I've been traveling quite a bit for work. The costs can add up really quickly and when it comes to work travel, sometimes we get in the bad habit of justifying the money we're spending rather than getting into the habit of watching where we're spending.

Here are some things to think about the next time you have a business trip to plan for:

  • Buy airfare ahead of time. Watch for special fares and buy when the prices are lower rather than waiting until the last minute. I try to fly Southwest because if I have a change in plans, I can cancel my flight and gain a credit for the ticket amount which I can use later.
  • Check transportation options. Sometimes sharing a cab is more cost effective than hopping on a shuttle. Check out all the available options for your destination.
  • Bring your own snacks. Munchie food at the airport can be 3 times more expensive than they are at your local venue. Also buying snacks from vending machines can eat up your cash quickly. If you bring your own you'll save!
  • Ship ahead or pay for another bag. Depending on which airline you choose, it might be less expensive to bring another bag on the plane than to ship items to your destination.

Most importantly, plan ahead. You can save a ton of cash just planning ahead with your business travel. Avoid big shipping fees, high ticket rates and last minute fees by taking care of your various travel needs ahead of time.

I just got back from a trip and took the time to pack a simple lunch to take with me on the flight. A turkey sandwich, banana and small bag of pretzels.

If I bought the same exact lunch in the airport it would have cost me at least $10. I probably spent $1-$2 making it at home. The mark up in airports is ridiculous!

Planning ahead is so key, thanks for the great tips on how to save on travel!

My husband travels a lot for work and sometimes he's gone for up to three weeks. HE works long hours when he's away and usually just wants to get back to his hotel after a job. The other thing is that eating out threee times a day can be extremely costly. So, what I do is cook and freeze individual portions in freezer bags for him to take along on his trips. He also takes individually packaged lunch meat, condiments, snacks and drink mixes. When he lands wherever he's going, he heads to the grocery store and picks up bread, milk, water and cheese. It saves us a great deal!
