Crafting on a Budget with Kids

So you have creative kids? You don't have to continually spend an arm and a leg on art or craft supplies to feed that creative appetite. Half the battle with creativity is just having a starting point. Encourage your kids to re-use and re-cycle items from around the house to create their crafty masterpieces you both can enjoy. Here are 5 ideas for crafting on a budget with bids:
- Try all kinds of paper - you don't need brand new paper to create pretty projects. Paint on newspaper, recycled gift wrap, junk mail and more. Explore paper textures and various collage projects using paper you already have.
- Re-purpose from kitchen to craft table - use recycled containers as paint pallets or cut them up and build something entirely new. Plastic bottles make wonderful musical instruments and even fun bowling games.
- Use it before you trash it - use items such as the plastic bags of cereal boxes as painting mats, mushroom tubs for water bowls and other items you'd normally just throw out. If you're going to trash it anyway, use it for the messier types of crafts and save cash on craft supply containers.
- Cans can store anything - soup can and other tin cans in a variety of sizes can be recovered and used to store a whole slew of materials. Pencils, paint brushes, scissors and other tools look great stored in cans with pretty paper covers.
- More than the shirt on our back - t-shirts and clothes the kids have outgrown can become fabric scraps for fun craft projects. Those jeans that are torn at the knee really don't have much use as a hand-me-down, so instead pull out the fabric scissors and help your child create something fabulous and new with texture!
Remember, teach your kids to reuse. The back of a used piece of paper is just as wonderful as the front. Their own imagination is what will make it fabulous.
Happy Crafting!
