Big tip from my family (youngest child is 6): Let the kids know what things cost and emphasize that there is "only so much money". Recruit their help in controling costs... if we eat in more vs. eating out then we'll have money to go to a movie or do something else as a family. Let them know that if household uses less electricity or changes the cable bill, that more money is available for other things. Let them know what getting cavities filled costs... and that it comes from other things... so that they learn to be frugal and respectful with money. Involve them in paying the bills.

Each girl has a bank where they divide any money into Charity, Savings and Store. Then when they want to purchase something I always ask them to wait a day or so to see if they still feel like it's worth it.

I explained to my 4 year old last night about how banks work when she asked to go out to dinner and I told her we dont have the money for it when she said lets go to the bank and get some! When I told her they just protect money you put in, I saw the light bulb.
I talk to her as though she is part of the decisions on money. Its funny to see her prioritize!
